Honda introduces new Freed MPV in Japan
ABU DHABI: Since the debut of Freed in 2008, it has been an important part of Honda's Japanese lineup. Now it has entered its third generation and utilises the same chassis present in famous models like the HR-V, Jazz, and City.

The new Freed comes with petrol-hybrid and petrol options, with the latter equipped with the brand’s e: HEV hybrid technology.With its latest version, the Freed has a more angular aesthetic and a boxier look, similar to the larger StepWGN. This design evolution maximises interior space and adds a touch of modernity. At the back, it has a short hood maximising interior space.
While specifics have not been revealed, prospective buyers can choose between two different design packages. The first one is called the Air package and it comes with a minimalist and sleek exterior design. The other one is the Crosstar package, which offers a more robust aesthetic, featuring a distinctive front end, added body cladding, notably increased ground clearance, and unique wheels.
The redesigned interior of the MPV prioritises spaciousness. It has ample cabin room all thanks to its pushed-back dash. For enhanced practicality, it features conveniently located physical controls, numerous cubby spaces, and a large central screen offering the perfect blend of familiarity and modernity. Available in six or five-seater layouts, the vehicle’s centre aisle contributes to easy movement.
In terms of size, the third-generation Freed is expected to surpass its predecessor, offering increased dimensions. It is a bit smaller than the BR-V and its design and layout maximise cargo and passenger capacity.
The new Freed is available in petrol-hybrid and petrol options. While Honda has not revealed full powertrain details, it has confirmed that the entry-level model will feature a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated with a CVT gearbox. Another variant will be equipped with the brand’s e:HEV hybrid technology, combining two electric motors with a 1.5-litre petrol engine.
The pricing and detailed specifications for the new Freed Crosstar and Freed Air are expected to be announced in June 2024 closer to the market launch in Japan.
