First 2020 Supra rolls out, shares factory with BMW Z4
ABU DHABI: The Toyota Supra is probably one of the most iconic models to come out of a Japanese automaker. So, it only makes sense that it is made in Japan, right? Well, with the various collaborations happening in the automobile industry, a car can be built pretty much anywhere. Such is the case with the 2020 Supra (codenamed A90), which will be manufactured at the Magna Steyr’s Graza plant in Austria.
If you have been following the development of the A90 Supra, then you will know that it shares the platform with the BMW Z4. Both these cars will be manufactured on the same assembly line at Magna Steyr. Also, 2019 BMW Z4 today made its ASEAN region debut. The first ever A90 Supra has also rolled out of the plant, stamped with a ‘20201’ VIN. Here, the ‘2020’ denotes the model year, and ‘1’ shows that it is the very first production model.
The very first car definitely has to be special, and it is. It was auctioned for USD 2.1 million (AED 7,713,400 approx) during the 48th Annual Barrett-Jackson Auction, held at West World Scottsdale in Arizona earlier this year. All proceeds will be going to support the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Bob Woodruff Foundation (BWF). This first A90 Supra had a matte grey paint job, red mirrors, black alloy wheels, and a red interior trim.
Toyota Supra chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada said “Partnerships come in many forms, and our partnership with BMW has been a new experience for both of our companies. We appreciate the enthusiasm and aspiration of everyone that has helped Supra become one of the most anticipated and exciting cars coming out this year. Thanks to you, I am proud to say that Supra has turned out to be a very exciting car.”
Being the legend that the Supra is, it has already sold out for the entire year in Europe and Toyota will soon start accepting orders for 2020. To ensure that the factory is tuned properly for the assembly of the Supra, Toyota flew engineers from Japan several times to perform quality checks. The Magna Steyr plant has also been responsible for the production of Minis and even the Mercedes G-Class.
