BMW gives a sneak peek at upcoming EVs with Vision Neue Klasse Concept

ABU DHABI: After wowing everyone with the Vision Dee concept and its 3D augmented reality HUD at CES 2023, BMW's upcoming Neue Klasse electric vehicles moved closer to becoming a production reality as the automaker revealed the latest Vision concept.

  • BMW introduced the Vision Neue Klasse concept to the public at the IAA Mobility 2023 Munich Motor Show. The concept features advanced drivetrain technology and substantial changes in both interior and exterior design.

BMW is planning to unveil six Neue Klasse electric vehicles (EVs) within a 24-month timeframe. However, due to segment-specific requirements, not all of them will be based on the same platform. CEO Oliver Zipse pledged: "From SUVs to sedans, we will have something for every customer."

The first offering from the Neue Klasse lineup will be a striking 3 Series-sized sedan. Although BMW executives have cleared the air that the Vision Neue Klasse concept isn't a production vehicle's exact blueprint, it gives cues about the design and innovative features we can anticipate in the pioneering electric vehicle.

The front end of the Neue Klasse concept is notable for its forward-slanted nose and dramatically expanded kidney-shaped faux grilles, which pay homage to the classic 2002 model. However, this design is more than just a nostalgic reinterpretation of a 1960s classic; it also incorporates a modern touch. The concept car features a digital grille with dynamic lighting effects that create a breathing-like pulse, giving its aesthetic a modern and dynamic look.

The minimalist cockpit designs of the Neue Klasse electric vehicles will make them stand out from the current cars. The iconic iDrive rotary control knob has been a hallmark of BMWs interior but has not been incorporated in the EV.

BMW has not revealed its next-generation EV platform's technical details, but R&D boss Frank Weber said it will bring "30 per cent more range, 30 per cent faster charging, and 25 per cent more efficiency" compared to current cars. BMW's new Gen6 lithium-ion batteries will be 20 percent more energy-dense.

Modifications to the production methods and design processes of these next-generation batteries are expected to yield up to 50 per cent cost reductions.

BMW plans to offer new electric vehicles in its core market segments. The company aims that electric vehicles will contribute to 25 per cent of its worldwide sales by 2025.
