Bentley pushes back debut of its first EV to 2026

ABU DHABI: Bentley has re-evaluated its electrification approach, pushing back its first all-electric vehicle’s launch to 2026 from 2025, with deliveries scheduled for 2027. This has been done in line with the broader plan of the automaker to allocate around $3.5 billion toward becoming a fully electric lineup between 2030 and 2033.

Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark explained that the delay was due to various technical challenges like platform-related complexities and software issues, similar to those faced by Audi and Porsche with the Premium Platform Electric. This platform holds lots of importance for Bentley as it will underpin its upcoming Evs and serve as the foundation for different models within the Volkswagen Group.

Bentley is focusing on replacing its key models like the Bentayga and Continental GT with electric variants, but the first electric vehicle will be a completely new model. Hallmark explained that introducing an "incremental model" without any predecessor would help in alleviating pressure. The production of the first Bentley EV will be in Crewe, where a dedicated production facility is being established for EVs.

Bentley is also making preparations to come up with a new high-performance PHEV system, based on a V8 engine, as the discontinued W12 engine’s successor. Bentley originally anticipated a decline in the demand for hybrid demand but it now foresees growth. It is making additional investments into the production of PHEVs that are expected to be available until the early 2030s. The Flying Spur, GT, GTC, and models will be updated later this year. They will feature the new V8 PHEV drivetrain, hybridizing the complete lineup of Bentley.
