Alfa Romeo GTV and 8C no more in the brand’s upcoming car list?
Alfa Romeo, the Italian car manufacturer, has seemed to postpone or completely halt the making of the two new cars, the GTV (Gran Turismo Veloce) and the 8C. This comes after the Q3 profit reports came out and a conference call was made with the investors. According to the sources, the head of FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), Mike Manley, in conversation with investors over a conference call, said that the product line-up of Alfa Romeo has been “significantly scaled back, with a corresponding reduction in capital spending,”
All hopes seem to have shattered after knowing that the presentation of the financial results did not include any reference to the GTV and the 8C sports car. This means either the company has postponed the projects to prioritize cars with high demand or shelved them completely. The presentation to the investors, however, revealed that the portfolio has been trimmed to just four upcoming car models, including refreshed Stelvio, Giulia and Tonale and a new B-segment SUV.
Earlier in 2018, Serio Marchionne, the former and late boss of FCA revealed the brand’s five-year plan with GTV and 8C on cards. However, Manley, upon taking charge, was interested in taking losses of FCA and Alfa Romeo operations into account first than anything else.
The cancellation of the pair is also allegedly due to the 50:50 merger between FCA and PSA Group following which the current CEO of PSA Group, Carlos Tavaras will take charge. Carlos is globally known for his cost-cutting measures, taken to boost efficiency and eventually profits. The merger will make the group the fourth largest automotive group in the world.
