2021 Maserati GranTurismo EV to have ‘Distinctive Signature Sound’

Italian luxury sports car manufacturer Maserati has claimed that its upcoming GranTurismo and GranCabrio electric vehicles (EVS) will have the ‘distinctive signature sound’ which is ‘unique and unmistakable’.  The Modena-headquartered company recently teased its upcoming range of electric-powered grand sports touring range of cars. The running sound of the cars is almost certainly to be different from the petrol-powered model which the company teased in November.

The sound of the new EVs is reportedly being developed at the Modena workshop.

Maserati had earlier hinted that its new sub-brand Blue would fully support all-electric versions of the rumored Quattroporte sedan, the Levante sports utility vehicle (SUV) and the Alfieri sports car.

The Fiat Chrysler-owned company, however, has now become more specific. It has announced the testing of an all-electric powertrain which will debut in the GranCabrio and the GranTurismo.  While Maserati has not revealed the powertrain, it’s expected that both cars will be much quicker than their respective predecessors, hauled by internal combustion engines (ICEs). The latter made 0-100 kmph in less than four seconds.

The GranTurismo officially debuted at the 2007 Geneva International Motor Show and was produced until November last year.

The new GranTurismo is expected to be launched next year, while the GranCabrio will be unveiled in 2022. Previous reports indicated that the battery-electric powertrain would have torque vectoring and all-wheel-drive. The cars will be powered by three electric motors making 0-100 kmph in about two seconds.

The same powertrain is expected to haul the upcoming Maserati sports car which is mounted on an aluminum spaceframe and is reportedly inspired by the 2104 Alfieri concept vehicle. The sub-Levante SUV, slated to be introduced in 2021, is also likely to be an all-electric car.

The all-electric versions of the redesigned Levante and Quattroporte are likely to debut in 2022 and 2023 respectively. The Ghibli, meanwhile, will be Maserati’s first plug-in vehicle and will be launched later this year.
